WHAT IS A PHOTOMETER?

In the broadest sense of the word, a photometer is an instrument used to measure illuminance or irradiance. In the context of groundwater analysis, photometers are used to measure color intensity within a water sample. In perfectly clear water, all of the light will pass through the sample, and thus changes in the color of the sample can reflect impurities in the solution.

The basic operational procedures of a photometer include:

• a sample solution is collected and placed in a test tube built specifically for the photometer

• a chemical reagent is added to the sample solution which is designed to change the color of the solution proportional to the concentration of the parameter of interest

• light is passed through the test tube containing the sample solution, and then through a coloured filter

• the filter allows the photometer to measure the intensity of the color of the sample solution, which can then be converted into the concentration of the parameter of interest.

Photometers are widely used in groundwater analysis.  There are many different photometers available, including those by YSI equipment.
